Dismal Swamp Canal Welcome Center - NC
"Gateway to Northeastern North Carolina,” the Dismal Swamp Canal Welcome Center is the only such facility in the continental US greeting visitors by both a major highway and historic waterway. Located in Camden County on scenic US Highway 17, the original Ocean Hiway, three miles south of the VA/NC border, the Center sits on the banks of the Dismal Swamp Canal, part of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. The canal is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, designated a National Civil Engineering Landmark and recognized as part of the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom program. The new 4.5 mile Dismal Swamp Canal Trail, a hiking/biking/birding/photography trail, makes “Paddling the waterway & Peddling the trail” very popular at the Center.
